Reach for the stars

Ceris is almost 20 years old, and her wedding is coming up. She is sewing beads onto her wedding dress, making an embroidery gift, and wants nothing more than to marry her betrothed and have a family and live in their cottage. She wants to belong and feel love as she hasn’t felt like she’s had in her childhood home. However, she starts having doubts when she realizes her betrothed is in love with another girl, and will never be happy with her. Then when the Sun calls for a Star Mother in her town, she realizes THAT is what she is meant to do instead. Star Mothers never survive the birth of their star child. …Until now. So…now what?

This book was so lovely and magical. Of all Charlie’s books it reminds me the most of Followed by Frost, which is my absolute favorite. The plot and characters are so divine and otherwordly, but also so tangible. I loved it when I started it, and I loved it in the middle, and I loved it when it ended.

It got a tinsy bit slow when Ceris and Ristriel are walking in the woods—that section takes an age—but the interactions between them and between Ceris and the Sun during that time were good. The romance is kind of quick but also when you go through intense action with a person you do get attached to them so I didn’t find it unbelievable.

Looking forward to book 2!

Review also posted on Goodreads.

I read book 2 and also enjoyed it, although not quite as much as the first book. Still, definitely worth a read!
